What is Cellulite?

cellulite

Most people, particularly women, are well aware that they have some areas of cellulite. But what is cellulite and are there any tips for cellulite removal? Here is our basic guide to cellulite.

Cellulite is a term used to describe pockets of fat underneath the skin that can cause a dimpled look to the skin. Cellulite is most commonly found on the backs of the thighs, abdomen, buttocks, and the backs of the arms. Men can have cellulite too, but it is more commonly found in women. Cellulite is thought to be more common in women because of all the hormonal changes they go through such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. 90% of all women will have cellulite develop on some area of their body after adolescence. Oral contraceptives are also thought to be a contributor to the development of cellulite in some women. Cellulite is commonly referred to as looking like cottage cheese or an orange peel because of the irregular nature of the dimpling underneath the skin.

What are the causes of cellulite?

Cellulite is thought to have many causes, some of which include sitting or standing in one position for a prolonged period of time, excessive consumption of foods that are high in fat or starch content, smoking, and lack of exercise. Tight clothing has also been linked to the appearance of cellulite particularly the elastic in undergarments that can restrict blood flow. Cellulite is commonly mistaken for obesity but this is not the case. Obese women may have more cellulite, but some very lean women, including some very popular celebrities have cellulite too.

The truth of cellulite removal

One of the most important things to remember is that there are no “quick fixes” or “miracle products” for cellulite removal. The only way to make cellulite disappear is to shrink the size of your fat cells. Unfortunately, there are no creams, lotions, or pills on the market today that are going to do that for you. Cellulite prevention and treatment must be done on both the inside and the outside of your body. Exercises that tone muscles and burn fat can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, and a healthy diet goes a long way to preventing more patches of cellulite from cropping up. The more toned your muscles and skin the less noticeable cellulite will be. Drinking lots of water and applying lotions to the affected areas will also give your skin a more toned and tightened look and make cellulite less noticeable.

Cellulite is hard to get rid of and it may take years, but there are some ways that you can make it less noticeable to yourself and others in the meantime. Sunless tanning gives your skin an even glow and makes cellulite patches less noticeable. Moisturizing your skin several times a day makes your skin look firmer and will also minimize the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite may not make be attractive but you can take heart in the fact that you are not fighting the battle alone. Nearly all women, ev...
